Yep already a facebook user see my FB profile here

I joined up initially realizing it was a good simple quick way to keep in touch with family and friends spread out around the country and beyond. It’s been good to share photographs – well mostly, I don’t think I’ve actually untagged myself yet…nearly, and I’ve found it’s in some cases a better way of getting messages through to some members of the family who have a habit of loosing phones or just not picking up their emails – a bit worrying sometime though when I’ve found myself having a virtual conversation with my daughter who is only upstairs at the time, but then she is 15 so sometimes that’s better for both of us!

I’ve had a number of conversations with colleagues around the School of Art, Design and Architecture ref the dilemma of do you become FB friends with students who send you a friend request, so far we’ve all agreed No, it’s better to keep the professional and possibly confessional apart. Some of us keep in touch with each other via FB and find it useful to share resource information, it’s good to know what sort of Art and Design related groups we are joining – more about that later.

Thing 15 – Google Maps Thing 16 Google Earth

Been there / done that /still doing that . I love Google maps, I use them regularly, as someone who has little or no sense of direction I find them really useful. I often use them to check driving directions especially as it is so easy to visually change the route and print off directions.

googlemap1
During the summer last year I use Google Maps to plot the route my son and his friend were taking while doing a sponsored walk.

We will walk 500 miles
walk from John O’ Groats to Keighley in aid of Manorlands Hospice, Oxenhope. David Lewis and Ryan Mitchell. 25th July to end August ish 2008.
here is a link to the 500Mile blog and a link to my Google map, I intend to actually finish plotting the route…sometime soon….
I also used the facility to linkup with Flickr and put photos onto the map – a mashup though at the time I didn’t know that’s what it was –

Thanks 25Things for the nudge about Google Moon

AS I dont’ live in or around Huddersfield I decided the best way for me to contribute to the 25Things Wiki was to put up a gallery relating to the School of Art, Design and Architecture

This time wikis found using Wikia web site. I like this much better..

ones I like include
http://folksongindex.wikia.com/wiki/The_Carter_Family    because of

The CARTER FAMILY at CHRISTMASat home & on the air; the songs, the stories, the family traditions. With Lynda Hardcastle, Helen Hockenhull, Mike Hockenhull, Alan Rose & Nigel Schofield. see http://www.skinnymalinksmusic.co.uk/artists/thesongsofthecar.htmlsongs-of-the-carter-family

– a special concept night at

Baccapipes Folk Club last December performed magnificently by the friends listed above, and pictured left.

“In the show, Alan, Lynda, and Mike & Helen perform many of the Carters’ best known songs, as well as some neglected gems from their repertoire, while Nigel Schofield tells their story, which encompasses groundbreaking commercial success and self-destructive personal scandal.”

http://morrisdancing.wikia.com/wiki/Morris_Dancing_Wiki might have something to contribute to this one later

LSD - Love Surface Design - View this group's most interesting photos on Flickriver

so after getting at bit frustrated with the 25things.Wetpaint.wiki I thought i’d look at some other Wetpaint wikis instead. here is a selection  – selectively random

http://toxicknitting.wetpaint.com    didn’t live up to the promise

http://phoenixmg.wetpaint.com/    better but not in depth enough

http://ukulele.wetpaint.com/  one for my son

http://mannydeguzmanartist.wetpaint.com/

http://supernaturalfanwiki.wetpaint.com/    fan sites they’re just not me…

http://folklists.wetpaint.com/  aha a subject I know about, might keep a closer eye on this one, it’s only been going since Dec o8 – looks like page 39’s our area and as I’m one of the editorial  and production team for the folk magazine Tykes News (website Jim Ellison) I just might be able to contribute here. Yep I’ve registered, posted a comment and I’ve add this one to my Google Reader.folk-thread

http://newapocrypha.wetpaint.com    just one of the many Doctor Who Wetpaint sites I found  – yes I know I said I didn’t think fan sites were me …but…Newapocrypha is a Doctor Who Wiki site, set up as a resource covering every aspect of expanded continuityreferences,speculation and role-playing. We are not interested in definingcanon, but instead seek to draw together the many fictional facts presented by Doctor Who and its spin-offs since 1963, considering the implications of their inclusion as part of a coherent fictional universe. It is meant to enhance your enjoyment of one of the best fictional universes ever created.”  I’ve also add this one to my Google Reader

Time to back away from the computer!!!

Friday and nearly at the end of week 9 of 25Things @ Huddersfield (Things 19-21) and my last post was about Thing 13 from week 6

so now time to play CATCH UP …….

I’ve had a quick look at Things 14-21 and actually I’m not as far behind as it would seem. I signed up for 25 Things Wiki on the Wetpaint web site way back during week 6 on the 1st of December – it is not the most user friendly of sites to use, but with a bit of perseverance I managed to register and upload a profile picture, however I’ve just visited the site and low and behold no photo after all, so I’m saving this as a draft and going to try again with the WetPaint Wiki –

I don’t live in or around Huddersfield so not sure yet how much I can contribute to a wiki about Huddersfield.

OK… I know i joined as a member on the 1st December, but….I’m not listed and when I logged in my profile photos was also nowhere to be seen, I’ve tried again and uploaded the photo again – I’ve loged in again this morning (sunday 25th Jan ) and I’m still not there, maybe it because I haven’t watched all the videos and just started editing my profile etc and didn’t completed the Orientation in the prescribed order, so I’m now working through those. Not impressed with WetPaint so far

new cake

today – a day off – time to decorate a cake for Jenny’s Birthday celebrations tomorrow night, never had this little time to decorate a cake before, so have to admit I didn’t make the fondant welly boots or shoes or the cake for that matter so here it is, a little manic, but I just couldn’t resist those candles – all 60 of them –

Now I find can’t do without my deli.icio.us accounts.

I also found it hard to define what ..went in/or goes in.. which account, it’s the work/personal thing again. So, now I have 2 deli.icio.us accounts – my home based more personal account – desimeleon see my tag cloud here  – http://delicious.com/tags/desimeleon and linked in the same network my 1st del.icio.us account, my work based trendhub account – its tag cloud is here http://delicious.com/tags/trendhub.

I only set up my desimeleon account a few days ago and found I could upload all my web browser bookmarks direct to it, which I did…..all 1256 ish of them. This ment there were things bookmarked on del.icio.us that really didn’t deserve to be bookmarked so some hours later I’m down to 499, no wait 500 as of a few minutes ago when I checked and acepted a recomendation from the trendhub del.icio.us account, a site I bookmarked earier today at work. I’d always bookmarked sites and kept these organised in folders, and, shared bookmarks between web browsers, but what i haddent done was apply tags to them, this is a bit advantage…to be able to give website multiple tags and so find them and related sites using a variety of lables is so much more helpful and flexible than just filing them in one folder at a time.

I LOVE TAGS !   – Thanks you 25 Things 🙂

and many of the students who use the Trendhub are starting to love tags and del.icio.us also.

now i’m always logged into desimeleon del.icio.us at home and trendhub del.icio.us at work – ready to bookmark and tag and share the world.

More 10/25 Tagging

So I’ve spent hours over the last week or so, back with “Thing 10Tagging and Del.icio.us, I just can’t stop. Doing the 25 things @ Huddersfield” has made me look much more closely at the way I use the Internet and all it’s resources, tagging ,categorising, separating, combining… it’s all become a bit of an obsession – Whats Work, Whats Personal, where does one start and the other end – well for me I don’t think there is a beginning and an end, the more I try to separate resources, the more I realize they overlap and blur .

So …next I set about making  the most of my blurry edges, and, using the Things I’ve learnt so far, making sure I can access all my Internet resources where ever I am.

1st rationalise, my email accounts, I still have let me see….2 blueyonder accounts, 1 fsmail account (used mainly for all those website registrations that have spam written all over them, particually shopping websites, 2 uni emails (1 for me, 1 for the hub – 3 if you count the ada e-learning mail account I share) and finally 2 Gmail accounts.

It was the Gmail accounts that were causing confusion since they both come with an iGoogle acount and all the add ons that go with it and you can only log into 1 at a time. I set up message filters for the emails along with automatic tags on  messages, amalgamated all my iGoogle bar widgets etc into 1 iGoogle account and gave admistration rights to my blogger account to the second iGoogle acount also.

This means i can now administrate all from one iGoogle login including this wordpress blog, and my desimeleon del.icio.us account.

More about my addiction to my iGoogle account on a seperate page.

13/25 – Wikipedia

So in the interest of completeness and in the spirit of 25Things….

here I am looking at Wikipedia

1st a random article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_Potato_Chip

It wasn’t the fact it was about food that caught my eye, no really, it was the inset about the lettering on the albam cover – ” The original lettering on the album’s cover parodied the logo of Variety, resulting in a legal controversy.”

This nudged my interest in copyright and IP. The article turns out to be nothing to do with packaging and/or potato chips as a food stuff but a music album by a group called the Vandals

Released June 29, 2004
Genre Punk rock
Length 33:24
Label Kung Fu
Producer Warren Fitzgerald

Item 12 of 25 ThingsWikis “Wiki is taken from the Hawaiian word wiki wiki meaning quick or swift. In Web 2.0 terms a wiki is a website in which content can be added, edited and changed by a group of members. This means a wiki is great way of getting people working together and collaborating online.” – from the 25 Things @ Huddersfield blog. Thanks I didn’t know where the word originated but did know about wikis as I use a number of them with students it’s a great way to share information as long as you realise not all info can be relied on, but for speed and as a starting point for further research the’re great.

My search for bookmarks on delicious. using the Tag – Wiki – came up with 396402 results and that was without looking at related tags, whoopie! more trails to follow…

so here is a bit a bout new to me wikis that I’ve now bookmarked –

My fav new to me wiki is The Design Encyclopedia “The Design Encyclopedia is a user-built source of reference material with the sole intention of defining, describing, chronicling and documenting the world through design in all its implications and manifestations – from the visual to the tactile, from the communicative to the evocative, from the cultural to the commercial. Most everything – from cars to burgers to movies – can be dissected by its design application, use and history.” Here are their rules for contributing, something I think all wikis need, basic guidlines –

1. The design encyclopedia is a public environment, please be mindful and respectful of those who spend time contributing to its growth and of those devoted to its development.

2. The design encyclopedia is not about opinions or subjectivity. Facts and information are the standard.

3. The design encyclopedia lends itself to a number of product entries; we welcome every single company or service to add their offering’s description but we severely frown upon any attempts at promotions or blatant advertising.

4. Ultimately, the editors of the design encyclopedia can delete anything they deem inappropriate.

AND SO NOW I have No TIME at all to do ANYTHING other than stare at a computer screen 24/7 ….curse you 25 things!

http://globotrends.pbwiki.com/trends “GloboTrends is a blog network & wiki set up to discuss the important global trends in economics, finance and innovation. Our goal is to create an online forum for discussion about global trends in macro economics, trade, finance, and innovation.” This seems to be a blend of blog and wiki and you need to be registered to contribute and entries are checked and vetted.

I’m not even sure If I want to look at wikipedia again when there are so many other wikis out there,
